Our Founding

IKO is founded in Calgary, Alberta by Isidore Koschitzky, 
initially producing building paper; shingle production began 
three years later.

Asphalt Production

IKO becomes the first shingle manufacturer to process 
its own asphalt on site.

European Expansion

IKO expands to Europe by building a shingle plant in Ham, Belgium.

IKO opens its first factory in the U.S. with the purchase of its Wilmington, Delaware facility.

First Built U.S. Site

IKO opens its first fully built U.S. plant in Sumas, WA, featuring its first four-wide laminator and a modified bitumen line.

Extending Footprint in Commercial Roofing

IKO acquires companies that belonged to the Ruberoid group, becoming market leaders in commercial roofing in Europe.

2010s

Global Expansion

IKO expands in Europe with a shingle plant in Slovakia (2011), and insulation plants in France (2014) and the UK (2018). IKO also grows in the U.S. South with new plants in Sylacauga, AL (2014) and Hillsboro, TX (2017).

Stone Coated Metal Roofing

IKO Metals is established following the acquisitions of stone coated metal tile factories in Belgium, the U.S., and New Zealand. A new metal roofing plant is commissioned in Ennis, TX.
