West Bank Community Library

The Project

APEX Roofing completed a 172-square roof replacement in a single day at the West Bank Community Library while keeping the building open to the public. Located directly across from a large high school, the project required precise coordination, strict safety controls and a roofing system capable of supporting both installation speed and long-term performance at scale.

The existing asphalt shingle roof, approximately 15 to 20 years old, had developed widespread blistering due to chronic under-ventilation. An undersized ridge vent failed to adequately service the expansive attic space, leading to excessive heat buildup over time.

For the replacement, IKO® Dynasty® performance shingles in the color Glacier were chosen for their elegance and stately appearance.

The Challenge

The library’s proximity to Westlake High School — a campus serving nearly 2,900 students — introduced significant logistical challenges. Managing traffic flow, maintaining safe access for library visitors and coordinating material deliveries in a high-traffic neighborhood required careful planning.

In addition, the new roofing system needed to correct ventilation deficiencies to prevent future heat-related damage — a critical concern in Texas, where attic temperatures can exceed 150°F.

The Solution

To minimize disruption, APEX Roofing scheduled the project on a school teacher workday, reducing overall site activity while preserving safe library access. Covered pedestrian walkways were installed and roof tear-off was completed before the library opened to the public.

Two coordinated crews of approximately 40 workers completed the entire 172-square roof replacement in a single day.

A key factor behind this performance was the ease of installation offered by IKO Dynasty performance shingles. True Square Advantage shingle sizing and a wider ArmourZone® reinforced nailing surface helped crews maintain consistent alignment, improve nailing accuracy and sustain installation speed — critical factors when executing a project of this size within a limited window.

“We’ve been using IKO since the day APEX opened its doors, but recently we made the decision to go exclusively IKO. It wasn’t a difficult call, the products perform and the team behind them is just as strong. That combination is hard to walk away from.” — Adam Murrell, Sr. Project Manager & SME, APEX Roofing.

Designed for demanding Texas conditions, IKO Dynasty shingles offer wind resistance limited warranty coverage up to 130 mph and feature FastLock® sealant to help resist wind uplift. A Class 3 impact resistance rating* (UL and FM) further enhances protection against hail and severe weather.

To fully resolve the root cause of the previous roof’s failure, four 45-watt Attic Breeze solar-powered ventilation units were installed, restoring balanced airflow and eliminating chronic attic heat buildup.
